چکیده

Following earlier work of Huggins and Nix [Ionics 6, 57 (2000)], several recent theoretical studies have used the shrinking core model to predict intraparticle Li concentration profiles and associated stress fields. A goal of such efforts is to understand and predict particle fracture, which is sometimes observed in degraded electrodes. In this paper we present experimental data on LiCoO2 and graphite active particles, consistent with previously published data, showing the presence of numerous internal pores or cracks in both positive and negative active electrode particles. New calculations presented here show that the presence of free surfaces, from even small internal cracks or pores, both quantitatively and qualitatively alters the internal stress distributions such that particles are prone to internal cracking rather than to the surface cracking that had been predicted previously. Thus, the fracture strength of particles depends largely on the internal microstructure of particles, about which little is known, rather than on the intrinsic mechanical properties of the particle materials. The validity of the shrinking core model for explaining either stress maps or transport is questioned for particles with internal structure, which includes most, if not all, secondary electrode particles.

Porosity and stoichiometry as efficient means to optimize Li storage in anatase

Anatase TiO2 is a stable, cheap, non-toxic and environmentally benign candidate for use as an anode active material for lithium ion batteries (LIB). Due to the comparably high lithium insertion potential of around 1.8 V vs. Li/Li, typical battery electrolytes can be used in their thermodynamic stability window. Anatase offers high capacity and high cycling stability, and due to the oxidic frame...

Improved electrochemical performance of SnO2-mesoporous carbon hybrid as a negative electrode for lithium ion battery applications.

To utilize the high specific capacity of SnO2 as an anode material in lithium-ion batteries, one has to overcome its poor cycling performance and rate capability, which result from large volume expansion (∼300%) of SnO2 during charging-discharging cycles. Hence, to accommodate the volume change during cycling, SnO2 nanoparticles of 6 nm diameter were synthesized specifically only on the outer s...

Direct observation of lithium-ion transport under an electrical field in LixCoO2 nanograins

The past decades have witnessed the development of many technologies based on nanoionics, especially lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Now there is an urgent need for developing LIBs with good high-rate capability and high power. LIBs with nanostructured electrodes show great potentials for achieving such goals. However, the nature of Li-ion transport behaviors within the nanostructured electrodes ...

Simulation study of the transport properties of ions through ion channels serving as primary components of a nanobiosensor

Ion channels are naturally occurring pores through the proteins that regulate the passage of ions and thus maintain the concentration of ions inside and outside the cell. The ion channels control many physiological functions and they can show selectivity for a specific ion. Ion channels are mostly observed in nerve cells and muscle cells. The influx of ions into cells can be regulated by a gate...
